Western Australia

This trip takes us to the North West Kimberley wilderness region. From Alice Springs we travel 1032kms along  the rough Tanami to Halls Creek in Western Australia. From there we travel to Fitzroy Crossing, Broome and then on to Derby. Leaving Derby we we travel the Gibb River Road which is 660kms to the junction of the great Northern Highway between Wyndam and Kununurra. The Gibb River Road is rightfully famous for crossing the stunning and the remote Kimberley region. But with better roads the trek isn't as risky as it used to be. Although, as the freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves at the water holes will attest, the drive still feels like an adventure. Freshwater crocs aren't the only life you'll see on the Gibb River Road. The drive passes by a few outback stations and roadhouses on the way, as well as increasing numbers of travellers. We recommend stopping at a few of the Kimberley region's famous gorges, like Bell Gorge and Windjana Gorge, where majestic rock structures are carved into the landscape. There are camping grounds near most of the gorges, and you can swim at some of them, although it's recommended you avoid swimming in those with crocodile warning signs.

This is a four part series of our Kimberley Tour. Leaving Adelaide we make our way to Alice Springs then head to Halls Creek via The Tanami and explored The Bungle Bungles.

From the Bungle Bungles we travel to Fitzroy Crossing and then on to Broome. The high light was the Malcolm Douglas Wilderness Park.

Leaving Broome we head for Derby and catch a sea plane to the Horizontal Falls. After a couple of days we leave Derby and hit the Gibb River Road. Along this route we encounter many gorges and camp in each one for a few days.

This is the final leg of our trip as we travel along the Gibb River Road towards Kununurra.
Places of interest were Mt. Barnett Station and Bell's Gorge. From Kununurra we make a slow drive back to Adelaide.
